Choose JPEG when The image is primarily photographic. A smaller lossy file is more important than transparency. The destination expects a familiar photo format. Choose PNG when You need an alpha channel or transparent background. The image contains sharp text, interface elements or flat-color graphics. Lossless storage matters more than delivery size. Choose WebP when You are preparing images for a modern website. You want one format that can handle photography and transparency. You can review outputs after browser-based encoding. Check transparency before converting. A transparent PNG can remain transparent in WebP, but JPEG output uses an opaque background. Always inspect a sample before processing an important batch.

Measured browser evidence Across 18 opaque matched-quality scenes, WebP was 57.1% smaller than JPEG at a 0.07 dB median sampled-PSNR gap. Six transparent scenes were excluded from that headline because JPEG flattened alpha to white.
